What We Do With Donations
It depends entirely on what the donation is.
If it’s a mortgage, we do try to see if there is any use in it on a financial basis. Generally there isn’t so it just sits in a drawer.
If it’s real estate, we look at potential use of the property by someone in the local area. This can be anything from camping, to parking a trailer, to use by neighbors to potential low income rental. Again, there is generally nothing we can do with it.
If it’s a timeshare we attempt to rent it out. We negotiate with the resort to generate use or to take it back into their inventory for resale. If they do take it back, this is NOT considered a resale by the IRS.
Regardless of the type of real estate, if we did resell it within 36 months, it would reduce your donation credit to a lower amount – whatever we sold it for. We do our best to find use for it, but even if it sits idle we will retain ownership for 36 months and not risk your donation credit with the IRS.
